The eagle-eyed football fans among you may have spotted a local family in the new UEFA EURO song We Are The People.

The song, by Dutch DJ Martin Garrix, features the likes of Bono alongside Meet and Deep's Pallu Patel and Shashi Patel!

The family said they were contacted by the producers to be part of the video and initially thought it was a joke.

"I thought it was someone making fun of us!" says Shashi.

"We got an email and we thought it was a scam," said Pallu and Shashi's son Deepen.

"But I replied anyway and next thing I know there was a camera crew of ten people at the shop - people who have worked with big names, too!"

"They said they were looking for a 'real' news agents - and they saw us on Facebook.

"They wanted real shopkeepers rather than actors.

"The video is about how football unites different people from different backgrounds."

Before filming the crew didn't say what it would be used for, only that it was for a famous DJ's promotional music video.

They filmed inside the shop on Hampton Road for nearly three hours, getting shots of the couple opening up the newspapers, pretending to watch football, and cheering at goals.

Pallu said the crew directed them a little but wanted all their emotions and reactions to be real.

"They said we had to talk about something or react to a goal, but in our own natural way.

"They wanted it to be all natural.

"The crew were really really nice," she added. "So friendly - they wanted to call me mum!"

"When people came in they would stop filming so we could serve them.

"If we did something wrong they just said: 'Don't worry, we can go again!'

Before the filming they had to send photographs of the shop, Pallu and Shashi. They initially thought the focus would be on Shashi, but it turns out the crews loved them both and Pallu is one of the first clips in the whole video.

"I thought maybe they would just be talking to Shashi and not me," said Pallu.

"I was so pleased!"

"They liked the chemistry between them," said Deepen.

Pallu was particularly pleased as she is the only member of the family never to have been filmed - the others all have quite an impressive CV of TV and filming experiences!

"It's the first time in my life I have done something for the TV," she said.

"It made me so happy!"

"I really enjoyed it. It's only a little shop but they squeezed in everywhere."

Over 40 families were filmed for the three-and-a-half minute video and the crew warned the Patels that they might only get a quick part in the final cut.

"Little did they know they are the main couple in the video!" Deepen said.

"We were shocked."

The producers must have been impressed with that chemistry as the Patels make six appearances in the finished video. The first is at 0.11 seconds in.

During the filming the shop never had to shut, one of Shashi's requirements for agreeing to do it.

"I don't like closing the shop and disappointing my customers," he said.

"It would be disappointing for people because there are certain things we do that people rely on."

- Those who know the shop will not be surprised to hear this!

Having isolated for the whole of the pandemic, Deepen said they were a little nervous at first letting so many people into the shop.

"What was really impressive was that they were really careful about Covid," he said.

"The day before they sent a courier with Covid tests and all the crew all had to have a test. We could do it only if everyone was negative.

"So it meant we felt better about being together in quite a small space."

And have any regular customers noticed them? Deepen said quite a few have and they have been particularly impressed with the millions of views the video has got - views are now at 4,788,997 as of Thursday (3) evening!
