A "one-woman band" property developer from St Margarets, Twickenham, is set to feature on the BBC.

Bernadette Anderson's home in Whitton will appear on tomorrow's episode of Homes Under the Hammer (Thursday, 4 September) at 11:15am on BBC One.

The former Global IT Consultant bought the property at auction in 2023 with the vision of turning the dated three-bedroom house into a six-bedroom co-living space.

Anderson told Nub News: "I literally saw the property on the Sunday night online, then viewed it on the Monday, and won the bid on the Thursday. It happened that quickly."

After securing the property for £474,500, Homes Under the Hammer invited Anderson to take part in the series, an opportunity she says she "jumped at", giving viewers the chance to see the house before and after the works.

The landlady invested around £300,000 in the home, transforming it into a property now valued at £900,000 in south-west London.

"I put my absolute heart and soul into this project," admitted Anderson. "I ripped the whole house out, except the beams on the first floor, so everything was a shell.

"The garden was quite overgrown, but I've completely transformed that house."

The home now features a 23 square metre double kitchen (credit: Bernadette Anderson).

The renovation did not come without its setbacks. Despite a number of challenges, including facing health problems, Anderson successfully completed the project.

She explained: "I had to replace my contractor right at the beginning because they thought I was just going to pay a blanket amount of £11,000 every week without verifying what each expense was.

"I also had to make sure I could extend up and out within the Council's permissions.

"I spent quite a lot of time on the design and managed to achieve six bedrooms between 10 and 16 square metres, which is quite big.

"It sounds straightforward, but when you have so many huge tasks running in parallel, and you do this on your own, it's a challenge."

Despite the amount of obstacles, Anderson's hard work has not gone unnoticed. She has been nominated in six categories at this year's Property Investors Awards.

She said: "I feel very flattered. When you get recognition from your peers, who've been doing this a lot longer than you...I'm really grateful."

Anderson hopes her appearance on Homes Under the Hammer will help audiences recognise the quality of what some landlords deliver, who she says sometimes "get a bad name".

"For me, it's not just a rental," she added. "I don't even really class it as an HMO [House of Multiple Occupancy]. It's a beautiful co-living space where people can come together.

"They're like a little family and I'm like a big sister to them."

Before becoming an independent Property Developer, Anderson was a Global IT Consultant (credit: Bernadette Anderson).

Excited to see the episode air, Anderson says being part of the show was fun and that it was an opportunity for her work "to shine".

She said: "I'm thrilled to be able to showcase my work, but I want people to learn from it — and that helps our community.

"The whole country's got a shortage of housing and we [landlords] are creating homes.

"I didn't actually realise how much satisfaction that would give me, creating a safe home for people."

The programme will also be available on BBC iPlayer for 30 days after broadcast.
