Twickenham MP, Munira Wilson, has been heralded among a group of Britain's leading campaigners and role models.

This week, the Lib-Dem MP and party spokesman on Education, was named Public Service/Campaigner of the year in Britain's Ethnicity Awards.

The organisers praised the MP for 'using her political platform to campaign against violence, advocate for mental health services and speak out on behalf of refugee rights'.

Munira's mother fled her homeland of Zanzibar during the revolution, becoming stateless.

The MP said: "I couldn't have become an MP without their hard work and I don't see why I should turn around and deny that opportunity to other people who want to come and do that."

Among the other winners was Sir Mo Farah, who is another local and has a sports track named after him at St Mary's University. He was named 'Sports Trailblazer' for his remarkable success on the world stage.

A posthumous award for 'Outstanding Contribution to Music' went to Jamal Edwards, the music entrepreneur and former student at Richmond College.

He rose to fame after launching SB.TV, a music platform which he started from his bedroom, aged 15, and the record label Just Jam. Jamal was made an MBE in the 2014 New Year Honours list for services to music

Other winners included Sir Lennie Henry, Emili Sandé, Johannes Radabe, anti-racism educators and founders of the Everyday Racism book club, sisters Naomi and Natalie Evans, Alison Hammond, Azeem Rafiq, Dina-Asher-Smith

Macquarie Logo, and the Muslim Council of Britain.
