October marks Black History Month and Richmond upon Thames has a host of events going on to mark it.

Black History Month is a brilliant opportunity to learn about black culture and get involved with various activities that promote Richmond's multicultural heritage. 

This year's theme is 'Saluting Our Sisters', highlighting the crucial role that black women have played in shaping history, inspiring change, and building communities.

Black History Month will also acknowledge the lives and stories of Black Britons who were living in the UK before the arrival of the Empire Windrush 1948. 

Cllr Nancy Baldwin, Spokesperson for Communities, Equalities and the Voluntary Sector said:

"This year's theme, 'Saluting Our Sisters' is a particularly wonderful one as we contemplate the history, heritage and contributions made by black women to our community and to the nation as a whole.

"I encourage all residents to get involved – by attending some of the events on offer and by reflecting on the achievements of our diverse community. By celebrating diversity and reclaiming black history, we can build a community where every Richmond resident can thrive."

Orleans House Gallery:

Visit the Orleans House Gallery to see exhibitions A Tree Says by Phoebe Boswell and Lines of Dissent, curated by multi-disciplinary artist Dzifa Benson.

Sancho & Me - For One Night Only

Charles Ignatius Sancho was born on a slave ship on the Atlantic Ocean in 1729, yet he became a writer, composer, shopkeeper and respected 'man of letters' in 18th century London.

It is a solo performance, part improvised each night that will be performed at The Exchange in Twickenham on 8 October.

Tickets cost £13 to £15 and are available here.

The Eel Pie Museum:

The Eel Pie Island Museum's permanent exhibition is promoting the musical history of Eel Pie Island and the African American artists that played at the Hotel's club, Eelpiland.

You can visit the museum on Thursday to Sunday, from 12 to 6pm.
