Richmond borough has been declared 'the safest borough in the capital,' seeing the fewest child pedestrian injuries or deaths in London between 2021 to 2022.

A series of Freedom of Information requests to The Department For Transport by Personal Injury Claims UK have revealed the number of child casualties on the roads of London boroughs, which researchers say 'range from minor bumps to fatalities'.

Nine child casualties were reported in the borough in 2021, compared to 10 the following year for a total of 19: the lowest across the capital over the two year period.

Neighbouring Kingston upon Thames, the former safest borough, saw what researchers described as 'an eye-watering' 114-percent increase in deaths or injuries over the same period, going from seven child casualties in 2021 to 15 in 2022.

Croydon had the highest number of child pedestrian casualties in the capital across both years, totalling a staggering 91 casualties.

In 2021, London saw the lowest number of road deaths since records began as a result of COVID-related lockdowns affecting travel patterns.

However this was far from universal, with ten boroughs including Islington, Camden, and Wandsworth seeing a decrease in child deaths on roads between 2021 and 2022.

Thankfully, more recent data from Transport for London shows the number of people killed on the capital's roads decreased by six-percent in 2023.

UK-wide figures for child pedestrian deaths between 2021 and 2022 can be found here.
