The leader of the Women's Equality Party, Mandu Reid, will speak at the first anniversary of the vigil to highlight violence against women and girls.

The vigil takes place every month on Twickenham Green and supporters are being asked to welcome along friends and family on Monday evening – September 5.

The event is designed to remember all the women and girls who have been killed by a man.

It is held at 6pm on the first Monday of every month at the Amelie Delagrange bench on Twickenham Green.

Amélie was a French tourist visiting Twickenham in 2004 when she was murdered.

Speaking at the vigil last month, the WEP's Sarah Ford said: "These killings have been going on for millennia, so how do we change this mind set?

"It's through activism; such as the simple act of turning up here each month holding the politicians and media to account.

"The words 'violence against women and girls' are now used in the media when discussing this issue. The women are not being investigated first for what they did to engender this behaviour, instead their loss is discussed.'

She praised the fact that Richmond borough council has signed up be a White Ribbon organisation last year. The White Ribbon pledge is to never use, excuse or remain silent around men's violence against women and girls.
