'Granny house' plans denied in Twickenham
By Cesar Medina 19th Apr 2026
A family's application to build a "granny house" to the rear of their property in Twickenham has been refused by Richmond Council.
The applicants, Mrs Saira Iqbal and Mr Umer Farooq, had their plans to build a single-storey ancillary residential annexe at the rear of their home on The Green declined due to design, waste and affordable housing reasons.
Mrs Iqbal and Mr Farooq intended to use the rear house to support an older member of their family.
In their application, they said: "The purpose of the annexe is to provide independent yet connected accommodation for an elderly family member, enabling supported living while maintaining close family ties."
The ancillary home would have included a bedroom, bathroom, kitchenette, small living area and featured a "low-profile dual-or mono-pitch roof to minimise visual impact".
Also, the applicants said the house would remain as ancillary use and would not be sold or let separately.
In one of its refusal points, a Council planning officer said: "By reason of its location, design, mass, size, scale and form, the proposal would overdevelop the application site and fail to positively respond to the established historic pattern of development in the host locality."
