Munira Wilson MP has won a long fight to bring five British children to safety from Afghanistan.

The Twickenham MP had worked tirelessly to bring the plight of the youngsters and their mother to the attention of the government and public.

She repeatedly raised the difficulties faced by the family in fleeing Afghanistan in the House of Commons only to be met by stonewalling by ministers in both the Home Office and the Foreign Office.

The MP took up the case after a local resident in the Twickenham constituency sought help when his brother, a British citizen and also former local resident, was assassinated by the Taliban in 2021.

The brother's British children – all under the age of 18 – were left stranded in Afghanistan because the Home Office would not grant their Afghan mother a visa.

As a result, the family were stranded in a Catch 22 situation where they were told the mother needed to apply for a visa to gain entry to the UK, however this required travelling to Pakistan to make the application, which was a potentially deadly journey.

The delighted MP was moved to tears on hearing the news. She told Nub News: "I was overjoyed when I received the phone call saying the family had arrived safely in the UK.

"For 18 months, these British children had been confined to their home in Kabul as it was too dangerous for them to leave the house.

"Our priority now is to provide the support and help they need as they settle into their new life in Twickenham."
