'Key works' begin on Twickenham Riverside regeneration project

The long-awaited regeneration of Twickenham Riverside is now taking shape, with key works underway following Richmond Council's recent approval of funding for the project.
The ambitious scheme will deliver new public spaces, improved river access, and 45 new home, including affordable housing, transforming a key part of the town centre.
Councillor Gareth Roberts, Leader of Richmond Council, said: "For years, residents have imagined a riverside that is open, welcoming, and at the heart of the community. With funding now in place, we are turning that vision into action. Residents will start to see real changes on the ground over the coming months."

Progress so far includes:
- Clearance of the former Santander bank, The Works and Superdrug units, preparing the site for demolition.
- Comprehensive surveys, including archaeological investigations, soil and drainage checks, and utility assessments.
- Safety measures such as hoardings, fencing and temporary facilities.
- A temporary substation now in place to support essential utility works.
- Heritage features, including the WWI Triptych and Diamond Jubilee Gardens artwork, carefully removed and stored.
Cllr Jim Millard, Deputy Leader and Finance and Resources Lead, said: "Behind the hoardings the riverside is taking shape, with sites cleared, surveys completed, utilities in place, and heritage preserved."
The latest works follow the Council's June decision to release funding for the main construction phase, unlocking significant long-term investment in the borough.
Cllr Millard added: "The Twickenham Riverside regeneration is much more than bricks and mortar – it will reconnect people with the river, support independent shops and restaurants, and create open spaces for everyone. Every step brings this vision closer to reality."

Main construction is due to begin early next year, delivering:
- 45 new homes, including affordable housing.
- Terraced lawns and landscaped gardens with improved accessibility.
- A children's play area with a treehouse and climbing wall.
- Pétanque pitches and tiered river-facing seating.
- Better pedestrian links from King Street to the riverside.
Councillor Roberts said the scheme would "unlock the riverside's potential and bring lasting benefits to Twickenham and the wider borough."
