The NHS has published its first ever league table rankings of Trusts across England, with Kingston and Richmond NHS Foundation Trust placed 31st out of 134 acute trusts.

The new system, known as the Aggregated Metric Ranking (AMR), scores trusts based on a wide range of measures including A&E waiting times, delays to elective treatment, cancer care, financial performance and patient experience. A lower score indicates stronger performance.

Kingston and Richmond NHS Foundation Trust achieved an AMR score of 1.77, placing it within the upper quarter of all trusts nationally.

Despite this, the Trust has been placed in Segment 3 of the NHS performance framework, a mid-ranking category reflecting areas where further improvements are still needed.

The best-performing trust in England was Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, followed by the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust and Manchester's Christie NHS Foundation Trust, a specialist cancer centre.

At the other end of the scale, Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn ranked last.

Kingston and Richmond's performance is notable given the Trust was only formed in November 2024, following the merger of Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Hounslow and Richmond Community Healthcare NHS Trust.

NHS England has acknowledged that mergers can affect results, as stronger trusts may inherit challenges such as long waiting lists from those they join with.

A spokesperson for Kingston and Richmond NHS Foundation Trust said: "We welcome the introduction of the new Framework as an important opportunity for people to review and understand their local healthcare services.

"We are proud that our strong performance in areas such as access to services, elective and cancer care, and patient and staff experience, reflects the dedication and hard work of our staff, who consistently put high-quality patient care at the centre of what they do.

"As a Trust, we remain committed to providing the best possible care for our local communities, while taking further steps to live within our financial means.

"We continue to keep a clear focus on learning, improving, and working with partners to do even better."

Health Secretary Wes Streeting said the new tables would provide transparency for the public and accountability for NHS leaders.

He told BBC Breakfast: "These league tables will help to hold me to account and help me hold to account the performance of NHS leaders across the country."

From next year, the Department of Health confirmed that the highest-performing trusts will be given greater freedom to shape local services, while underperforming trusts will receive "enhanced support".

In some cases, leaders of poorly performing trusts could face pay reductions.
