The results of Richmond Council's byelections are in - it's a Lib Dem gain in Hampton North and a Lib Dem hold in Teddington.

Two by-elections were held yesterday for Richmond Council following the sad deaths of Conservative Cllr Geoffrey Samuel for Hampton North and Lib Dem Cllr Martin Elengorn for Teddington.

Lib Dem Richard Baker won for Teddington having received 64.27% of the vote.

The Conservative candidate, Elizabeth Foster, received only 21.01% of the vote.

Lib Dem Carey Bishop won for Hampton North, receiving 53.19% of the vote.

Conservative candidate, Nupur Majumdar, received 21.01% of the vote.

A Lib Dem win for Hampton North means that for the first time in the council's history, no Conservatives are sitting on the council.

In 2014 the Conservatives won 39 of the council's 54 seats and now they are down to zero.

In a statement Munira Wilson, Liberal Democrat MP for Twickenham, said: "The incredible results in the Teddington and Hampton North by-elections reflect the warm welcome Liberal Democrats have received on the doorstep. They are a resounding vote of confidence in the local council, and have sent a strong message to this out-of-touch Conservative government that enough is enough.

"I'm thrilled that Richard Baker has resumed his old seat as a Teddington Cllr, and am likewise thrilled to welcome Carey Bishop as a Hampton North Cllr, bringing her incredible experience as a successful businessperson and former magistrate."

Leader of Richmond Council, Cllr Gareth Roberts tweeted the following:
