New BBC documentary on Esports filmed inside Twickenham Stadium!

By The Editor 13th Aug 2021

Twickenham Stadium is the largest dedicated rugby union venue in the world and home to England Rugby, but did you know it is also home to one of Britain's leading Esports teams?

This month, BBC Three launched a documentary about the international Esports stars who train together at a state-of-the-art facility inside the stadium.

The new five-part series Fight For First: Excel Esports is narrated by Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy and follows a team of five young professional gamers in their second year at the League of Legends European Championship.

This is an underdog story about the Excel team who, after finishing last in their first season, aim to make a comeback by finishing in the top six, which means they would go on to the World Championship.

The fanbase for Esports is vast, with more people watching the League of Legends World Final than the Superbowl.

There is also a lot of money to be made. Reportedly, investors poured millions into the Excel team, and the prize pool for teams who make the top six is 400,000 euros. One spokesperson for the team said that players can, at best, earn six-figure salaries.

Excel Esports was founded by brothers Joel and Kieran Holmes-Darby in 2014, who were determined to create a British powerhouse. They have since recruited sporting professionals to train with their team at Twickenham Stadium, including sports psychologist Fabian Broich as Head of Performance and Tottenham Hotspur's Dele Alli as an ambassador.

The boys live together 24/7 and have a rigorous training regime under the watchful eye of sports scientists and nutritionists. They start their days with a cardio workout at the gym, followed by a warm-up game, then a team strategy meeting, practice 1pm-6pm and then play individually from 6pm-12am. A good night's sleep and balanced diet are also part of the programme.

Aside from the pressures of playing for a professional Esports league, the documentary also explores the coming-of-age challenges that the boys experience while living in such an unusual environment, including meeting girls and maintaining relationships with those on the outside.
