A new membership scheme aimed at supporting mums and local businesses has launched in Richmond borough.

Called Mumbership, the initiative offers mothers a digital membership card that can be used at participating cafés and restaurants across the borough to receive discounts of between 10 and 20 per cent.

The idea was created by local mum Maddy with a four-month-old baby, who wanted to find a way to support other mothers while also encouraging people to spend time in independent local venues.

Members pay a small annual fee to join, with the first 200 sign-ups costing £15 before the price increases to £20 per year.

Once registered, mums receive a personalised digital card that can be shown at participating businesses to access the offers.

Maddy said the idea came from her own experience adjusting to life on maternity leave.

"As a new mum myself, I thought a membership card exclusively for mums could benefit both mums and local businesses," she explained.

"For businesses, it can bring more customers during the day when mums – particularly those on maternity leave – often have spare time.

"At the same time, it helps mums save money at a time when finances can change and often drop to maternity pay."

So far, 15 local businesses have signed up to take part in the scheme, with more expected to join over the summer.

Participating venues and offers are being gradually announced through the project's Instagram page.

The scheme aims to build a network of local offers that help mums get out and about while also supporting Richmond's independent cafés and restaurants.

More information about joining the scheme can be found on the Mumbership website here.
