A new play café specially tailored for both adults and children has created a buzz after it announced it will launch in Twickenham this autumn.

Cheeky Chops Play Café on York Street is a family-run business run by husband-and-wife team Mike and Ruth Tilles, and aims to open its doors by September.

The café is currently being fitted with play frames for children aged 0-5, and a café for the adults to relax in.

Mike said: "We opened the play café because, as parents of young children ourselves, we felt that the local area was sorely missing a facility that provides an equally positive experience for both adult and child.

"We hope that our facility will provide this and will become an integral part of the local community.

"We went through a bit of an ordeal finding the premises (including a long wait due to Covid) but finally found what we feel will be the perfect location."

The couple are planning to have four 90-minute play sessions per day, which can be booked online or paid for at the door if there is still space for a session.

There will be a charge per child, but adults will be able to use the café for free.

Mike has been pleased about the buzz around the café since he started sharing the news on social media.

One local said: "This is a fantastic idea and much needed in Twickenham - wishing you both the best of luck and looking forward to visiting!"

So what kind of food will it serve? Mike said: "The full menu is yet to be confirmed but we will be providing children's food all day as well as cakes and pastries for adults.

"We will also make sure that we provide good coffee for the adults - we know from experience how important this is!"

Mike and Ruth live in Twickenham with their two young children (aged four and two).

Previously Mike worked as a French and Spanish teacher for 12 years in schools in south west London and Surrey.

During lockdown he also became a published author! He said that writing a children's book has been a "long-time ambition".

His books, including The Dove who Learned How to Love and The Shark Who Was Scared of the Dark, are now on sale on Waterstones' website and in some local stores in Twickenham, Teddington, Wimbledon, Richmond, Putney and Kingston.

Ruth worked as a recruitment consultant in the city for six years, and also spent a year working in Copenhagen for Maersk Oil.

In 2015 she had a complete change of career path and trained as a yoga instructor, and has been doing that ever since.

We wish them all the best of luck with their new café!
