Cornerstone of the community, Park Lane Stables, has seen its planning application receive the green light from Richmond Council this morning.

Plans were initially submitted to the council back in November 2022, and as of this morning, the revamp project has been approved following a consultation process that took place in May 2023, meaning Teddington-based Architecture: WK is able to finalise drawings before the tender process begins officially.

The refurb project revolves around making the stables in Teddington, which dates back to at least the 1830s, more comfortable for staff, members and horses alike.

Courtyard 1 of Park Lane Stables, the forecasted drawings have been completed by local architects, Architecture: WK.

Key changes to the stables will see previous accommodation at the eastern end of the building converted into a quiet area with some additional facilities. This is set to include the now famous 'cuddle door' stable which will overlook the pavement.

Having horses in this section of the building will not be a new feature as there were previously at least two stables located in the same area, according to a local expert.

Plans will also see a reduction in the amount of stables from seven, rather than eight, meaning the site will not see an intensification in the use for riding and will see no increase in vehicle movements of horses, hay, straw or of staff and visitors.

Staff are well underway with preparations and have already begun stripping centuries of paint from the old fabric of the building to ensure any structural work is identified.

Reacting to this morning's news, Park lane Stables took to Twitter, writing: "Delighted to let everyone know that we have received a YES for our planning application to make our forever home the best it can possibly be. Thank you for everyones support and patience on this. We are so excited for the next chapter, the cuddle door will be back for good!"

Currently based at Manor Farm Stables in Petersham, it is hoped Park Lane Stables will be able to return to its Teddington home around the turn of the year.

From a stables on the brink of eviction in May 2021, the exciting future plans for Park Lane Stables shows the remarkable change in fortunes as it prepares to embark on the next chapter of its wonderful fairytale.
