Plaque unveiled by community of Ukraine to thank people of Twickenham
A moving ceremony saw the unveiling of a plaque thanking the people of Twickenham for their support for Ukraine this week.
The plaque, at the civic offices in York Street, was donated by the local Ukrainian community who have been welcomed into the homes of locals.
Volunteers from Twickenham have provided a crucial role in gathering donations of vitally needed supplies to the people of Ukraine.
The plaque was blessed by the Rev Jeff Hopkin Williams, the vicar at St Mary's Church, and it was unveiled by the Mayor, Cllr Suzette Nicholson.
There were also words from the Council leader, Cllr Gareth Roberts, and the singing of the Ukrainian anthem.
The plaque was a gift from the Ukranian Prosperity Café, which has become a key London hub for the collection of donations sent to help families in the war-torn country.
When the full-scale war broke out in Ukraine in February last year, Galyna Kosynska and Oleksandr (Alex) Yarema, who run Prosperity, took the decision to close its doors as a restaurant and instead put the space to use helping those in need.
They have been supported by a large group of local volunteers, schools and other community groups. And – to date – they have sent some 107 lorries of aid sent to Ukraine.
