The police have objected to plans for a Twickenham shop to extend its licencing hours, saying it would cause an increase in anti-social behaviour.

Mediterranean Supermarket on Heath Road already has permission to sell alcohol from 7am to 11pm Monday to Sunday, but has now asked Richmond Council to extend this until 2am seven days per week.

But local police remain unconvinced and have recommended the change be refused.

"If the variation to the current licence was to be granted, it is likely there would be an increase in Anti-Social Behaviour / gatherings outside the venue or proximity of it, which will cause a nuisance and risk to local residents," the objection said.

"The Mediterranean Supermarket is approximately 300 metres from Twickenham Green, known for previous issues in relation to youths congregating and causing ASB, having managed to obtain/acquire alcohol locally.

"The police believe that the increase in hours of off sales of alcohol into the early hours of the morning, may have a negative effect on reducing this type of ASB, along with increased likelihood of theft/offending."

Another objection has also been submitted by Environmental Health, and will be discussed at a hearing next week during which a decision on the extension will be made.

A senior environmental health officer wrote: "I am objecting to the variation of license with regards to moving the licensing to seven days a week till 2am.

"This premises is situated within a residential area with flats to the rear, therefore in my opinion the likely of a noise nuisance effecting the residents such as consumers congregating outside and deliveries from motorbikes etc.

"The background noise is much lower in that area after midnight therefore, noise and antisocial behaviour may well be an issue."

The application will be discussed at the licensing sub-committee on Monday 14 October.
