Twickenham residents have shown their disappointment after the branches on a large fallen tree were chopped off.

The tree can be found off London Road near Twickenham Station, at the start of the River Crane walk.

Hilary Copeland said: "Such a shame that the branches of the beautiful fallen tree along Twickenham Junction Rough have been cut down.

"Not sure why as it made a lovely natural climbing adventure."

Kate Rumsby added: "Oh that's such a shame. The kids adored that tree!

"My daughter has just seen these pics and is now in floods of tears! I hope they're not planning on taking it all away?"

Friends of the River Crane Environment is a charity which aims to protect and enhance the open spaces and environment around the river locally.

"We were disappointed to find out that large scale work has been done on the fallen plane tree in Twickenham Rough," the charity said.

"Some work had been agreed between the council and contractors for safety reasons but apparently more was done than officers had anticipated.

"We have contacted the council today and asked that an informal play area is created from the remaining trunk and logs."

Twickenham Nub News has contacted the council for comment and is awaiting a reply.
