Residents fight plan for 5G mobile mast

Plans of a 15m mobile phone mast next to a small green alongside the A316 in Twickenham are being opposed by residents.

Some 35 objections have been lodged with Richmond Borough Council for the proposal by Hutchison 3G UK, which operates the Three mobile phone network.

Mobile phone giants are pushing for a raft of new masts up to 20m high on sites across the borough to support high-speed 5G mobile phone services.

However, a number have been proposed for sensitive green spaces, drawing opposition from residents.

Generally, the decisions on the masts are made by Council officers, rather than elected councillors.

Hutchison said: "The proposed development includes for the installation of a new 15m monopole tower to support antenna, associated radio-equipment housing and ancillary development hitherto.

"This location has been identified as being integral to the needs of H3G's network in this area."

The location is some 290m from Twickenham School and 210m from the Clarendon Gateway Centre. A number of people in nearby Selkirk Road have complained.

One resident said: "As a resident in the direct vicinity of the proposed mast and someone who cares about the wellbeing of fellow

residents, children in nearby schools and the local natural landscape, I strongly object to this proposal.

"It will not only be unsightly and overbearing but unfitting and out of proportion to the surrounding area. This therefore makes this is a siting

issue as it is an incompatible and unacceptable use of land and that is a material planning consideration.

"There is evidence of masts emitting noise, electromagnetic radiation and pollutants which can cause adverse health effects and it is known that radiation exposure levels within 500m of a mast increases the risk of neurological symptoms, headaches and loss of memory and learning capabilities, especially in children.

"The area surrounding is often used for play, dog walking, bird spotting and a number of other recreational activities. And as I'm sure you're aware, open green spaces like these are vital to the mental wellbeing of local residents, especially those suffering with anxiety and depression."

Another said: "I suffer with severe mental health and the clear view of the green is my safe space and helps to clear my mind and relax me. A large tower there would completely ruin this and make me feel down."
