Richmond Council say it is 'stepping up efforts' to protect residents and tackle crime head-on across the borough with the approval of new CCTV plans.

One of the features of the new CCTV Strategy for 2024 to 2029 is the use of Rapid Deployment Cameras.

These cameras can be easily set up in new locations in response to specific, time-limited issues.

This flexibility allows the council to address residents' concerns more effectively by focusing surveillance on trouble spots as they arise.

Councillor Gareth Roberts, Leader of Richmond Council, says: "CCTV is critical in our mission to keep Richmond the safest borough in London.

"It allows us to work rapidly with the police to prevent crime and track down perpetrators which was recently proven when a CCTV operator helped the police catch three suspects who robbed and set a fire at a café in Twickenham, showing how vital real-time monitoring can be in solving crimes quickly.

"Residents can be reassured that CCTV is something we continue to invest in so they can feel safe in their communities."

Monitoring CCTV around the borough is Richmond Council's dedicated team the joint Control Centre (JCC).

The team works closely with the Metropolitan Police to respond to incidents in real-time and are crucial to identifying and apprehending criminals, from petty theft to more serious offences.

Richmond Council say the JCC's efforts extend beyond just serious crime prevention.

They also tackle antisocial behaviour, fly-tipping, and graffiti, with cameras located across hotspots to catch those responsible for the behaviour that ruins the look, feel and safety of the borough's streets.

Richmond Council add: "The new CCTV Strategy is a proactive step towards creating a safer community.

"We are committed to delivering on our vision for Richmond upon Thames, working tirelessly to keep streets safe and residents protected."
