Richmond's place at the heart of the film and television culture is confirmed in the new Netflix drama, The Sandman.

Several properties around Richmond Green were seen in the first episode of the drama, which is based on the DC Comics series The Sandman, created by British author Neil Gaiman.

The Green has played host to many famous names from cinema and TV, including – in recent times – the award-winning Ted Lasso and Peter Rabbit.

The Sandman follows Morpheus, the King of Dreams, who embarks on a journey to reclaim what was stolen from him and restore his power, after having been mistakenly imprisoned for decades.

The first series has already been lauded by fans of fantasy fiction and there are hopes that a second series will be commissioned.

Gaiman said the original plan was to film much of the production in and around New York, however this became impossible because of the pandemic. As a result, much of the filming was switched to the south east of England.

They swapped the New York scenes for Canary Wharf in London, while scenes were also shot around Pembroke Villas, on Richmond Green, and nearby in June 2021.

A lot of the series was shot around Shepperton studios. Crews were also spotted filming at Guildford Cathedral, with social media users spotting filming equipment and signs in February 2021.
