A major expansion of the on-street Bikehanger scheme has been announced.

The hangars provide a secure place for people who do not have enough room at home to store cycles, in return for an annual fee.

The system is managed on behalf of Richmond Borough Council by CycleHoop, who typically charge £72 a year.

The Council hopes the move will encourage a shift from cars, with all the associated exhaust fumes linked to climate change and health problems, to two wheels.

Richmond borough has high levels of bike usage and thefts of what can be very expensive and sophisticated machines. Police routinely host bike making events to help deter thieves and, hopefully, ensure any that are recovered get back to their owners.

Following a new round of resident consultation, bike hangars have already been installed, or will be installed in 29 locations.

The Council said: "Bikehangars are designed to provide a secure and convenient on-street cycle parking solution, that can only be accessed by a member using a key.

"They encourage more active travel by providing a solution to those who would otherwise be unable to securely store a bicycle."

Bike hangars have already been installed in seven locations - Taylor Close Car Park, Hampton Hill (2 units); Holly Road Car Park, Twickenham; St Margaret's Road; Cave Road, Ham; Haggard Road, Twickenham; Albert Road, Richmond; and Twickenham Green.

Bikehangers will be installed in 15 locations: Church Street Car Park, Twickenham; North Road, Kew; Fitzgerald Avenue, Mortlake; Haliburton Road, St Margarets; Second Avenue, Mortlake; Marsh Farm Road, Twickenham; Radnor Road, Twickenham; Kingston Lane, Teddington; St Margarets Grove, St Margarets; Mount Ararat Road, Richmond; Onslow Road, Richmond; Sheen Road, Richmond; Prospect Crescent, Whitton; Station Road, Hampton; Stanborough Close, Hampton North.

Bikehangers will be installed with minor amendments in another five locations: Church Road, Richmond; Lancaster Park, Richmond; Grosvenor Road, Twickenham; Redfern Avenue, Heathfield; Lawn Crescent, Kew.

The Council has decided not to pursue installing them in three locations based on resident feedback and further assessment.

Bikehangers will not be installed in: Alder Road, Mortlake; Alexandra Road, East Twickenham; and Kew Road, North Richmond.
