For many adults, aging brings with it the unwanted reality of reduced mobility — difficulty walking, climbing stairs, or even rising from a chair.

In fact, studies show that nearly 30% of adults over the age of 70 face these challenges. But while this may seem inevitable, research reveals one powerful way to slow, or even reverse, the effects of aging: strength training.

Known medically as sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle mass begins subtly in our 30s, but accelerates after the age of 65.

"What many don't realise," says Tom from The Shredquarters Twickenham, "is that you can significantly maintain or even improve your muscle strength with regular resistance training — no matter your age."

In response to this growing need, The Shredquarters Twickenham has expanded its class timetable to include 15 weekly 'LIFT' classes focused purely on strength and resistance work.

These sessions are specifically designed to be accessible for all ages and abilities, with participants ranging from their 20s right up to their 70s.

"Our LIFT classes are slower-paced and place a big emphasis on form, technique and proper coaching," Tom adds.

"Each session is led by two personal trainers who can adapt every movement to suit different fitness levels — whether you're a beginner, coming back from injury, or ready to build serious strength."

Beyond physical benefits, the impact of strength training is far-reaching. Regular resistance exercise can reduce the risk of falls, improve balance, ease joint pain, and boost confidence — all of which contribute to a better quality of life as we age.

Perhaps most importantly, the classes are designed to be welcoming and community-driven.

Tom explains: "We want people to look forward to coming. This isn't just about lifting weights — it's about building resilience, independence, and a healthier future."

The Shredquarters Twickenham is currently offering a free trial strength class to anyone interested in experiencing the benefits of strength training for themselves.

"Strength isn't just for athletes, it's for everyone who wants to live well for longer," admits the personal trainer.
