A Twickenham vet is reminding dog owners what to look out for with kennel cough, a common infection that spreads easily wherever dogs meet, especially during colder, damper times of the year.

Hazel Maw, Head Veterinary Surgeon at Creature Comforts Vets Twickenham, said: "Kennel cough is a bit like the canine version of a common cold – and it can certainly sound dramatic!"

Kennel cough is an infection of the upper airways. It passes easily between dogs wherever they come into contact, from a walk in the park to a stay at boarding kennels or a day at doggy day care.

The best-known sign is a persistent, honking cough. Hazel explained: "It often causes a distinctive dry, hacking cough, sometimes making it seem as though your dog has something stuck in their throat."

Some dogs may also sneeze, have a runny nose or watery eyes, seem a little tired, or go off their food.

"It spreads easily between dogs, particularly in places where they mix, such as parks, kennels and doggy day care," Hazel said.

Most cases are mild and clear up without trouble. Some dogs may need closer attention, though, especially puppies, older dogs and dogs with existing health conditions.

"Most dogs recover well, but puppies, older dogs and those with existing health problems may need a little extra TLC," Hazel added.

Simple steps to protect your dog

A yearly vaccination can help lower your dog's risk of catching kennel cough. At Creature Comforts Vets Twickenham, the vaccine costs £85.

Owners can also get the kennel cough vaccine included, along with all their dog's other annual vaccinations, through the practice's All Access membership for £20 a month.

Hazel said: "Vaccination can help reduce the risk, and if your dog develops a cough, it's best to check in with your vet and give your four-legged friend a little breathing space while they recover."

Creature Comforts Vets Twickenham is at 33-35 London Road. Owners with a coughing dog, or anyone who wants to ask about vaccinations, can book an appointment through the Creature Comforts website or app.
