It is currently being created on what was a large blank wall on the side of the Iceland store at the junction between King Street and Wharf Lane, which leads down to the riverside.

The giant kingfisher sits against the background of a map of Twickenham and an image of the road bridge across the Thames.

The major investment comes as the Council tries to push through a £40 million scheme to redevelop the nearby Riverside with a mix of apartments, hospitality, play areas, public spaces and a traffic-free promenade.

The mural is understood to be the creation of the company Essential Living, who manage the buildings fronting on to King Street.

The manager of the Twickenham Business Improvement District (BID), which represents local businesses under the brand Discover Twickenham, Amanda McLoughlin, welcomed the initiative.

She said: "Discover Twickenham have been discussing the idea of a mural in this location with Essential Living for some time and so we are pleased to see it finally becoming a reality.

As well as the mural the installation will include a 'Welcome to King Street' sign in aluminium, while parts of the image will be illuminated with low power lights that will be switched off through the night.

"It is a fantastic addition to the town centre and very much supports our ambition to create a vibrant and welcoming town centre for everyone that lives, works and visits the area."

Council planning officials approved the mural in September without the need for a reference to councillors on the Planning Committee.
