Parents have launched a fundraising plea after the ceiling in the school library at St Mary's in Twickenham was brought down by torrential rain.

The storm on Monday caused flash flooding on a number of local roads and led to the temporary closure of Marks & Spencer in Twickenham.

St Mary's operates on three sites. The damage was caused to the ceiling of the Middle Site in Strafford Road.

One supporter of the school wrote on Twitter: "Library at St Mary's Primary School, Twickenham, flooded yesterday - ceiling collapsed in torrential rain, destroying books, furniture and children's artwork.

"The PTA is fundraising to replace lost books."

The Twickenham MP, Munira Wilson, is supporting the effort of the parents and school. Earlier this month, she raised the wider issue of problems with school building repairs in Parliament.

St Mary's operates on three sites. The damage was caused to the ceiling of the Middle Site in Strafford Road.

The MP said the current backlog repairs bill for schools across the country has been put at £11.4 billion, which has risen by billions in the past five years.

People are asked to help support the St Mary's appeal via this link https://app.collectionpot.com/pot/3114703/

As of this morning – Wednesday – the figure had reached more than £2,100.

The appeal page reads: "Please donate what you can to help repair and re-build the Middle Site Library after recent rain damage.

"Gift Aid will be claimed on your behalf through the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme. If you're able to secure match funding from your employer please consider doing and donating directly to the FoSM bank account."
