Supermoon followed by extra high spring tides in Twickenham this week

The Thames Barrier was closed last night and tides in Twickenham are expected to be high again today as a result of spring tides and bad weather in the North Sea.

The Environment Agency forecast high levels again today (April 29) and early tomorrow morning between Putney and Teddington, likely at a similar level to yesterday afternoon.

River levels may reach 4.8m by 5.30pm tonight, and the same at 5.45am tomorrow.

Flooding of low-lying roads and footpaths one to two hours either side of high tide is expected at Twickenham riverside and embankment, and Teddington Lock towpath.

Following tides aren't expected to be as high, and the barrier has now reopened.

Experts expect no further Thames Barrier closures as there is now little risk of properties flooding.

Alan, The Thames Barrier's Flood Forecaster, said yesterday: "Forecast bad weather in the North Sea is set to create some tidal surge, which on top of a very high spring tide is causing concern for central London.

"This will be the 199th time we've protected properties from flooding.

"A long night for those involved while London sleeps easy."

Nub News reader and photographer Ruth Wadey captured the tide yesterday as it rose and pushed a bench over along the Twickenham riverside. It also flooded her garden.

Locals are used to flooding along the river, although it still manages to catch out unsuspecting visitors.
