A women's football team in south London is opening a new venue in January 2025 and is seeking players.

Swans Football for Women is offering women in the Richmond, Barnes and Chiswick areas the chance to 'learn or return to football in a welcoming environment'.

The club say the sessions are open to women aged 18 to 81+ with no previous experience necessary.

Although the growth of female football continues to accelerate, most women over the age of 25 never enjoy the same chances to play and participate as are available today.

Therefore, the aim of the Swans Football programme is to provide an opportunity for this age group to play and help reduce the risk of this group becoming a lost generation, the team explains.

Eamonn Newell, Founder of Swans FC says: "We are excited to keep expanding the Swans programme and create more opportunities for women to play.

"It has been inspiring to witness the players' determination and commitment and the many new friendship groups that are being created along the way.

"We want to continue attracting more players to the game with the emphasis on fitness, friendship and fun."

Aimed at women of all skill levels, Swans FC was founded in Twickenham (credit: Swans FC).

Swans FC started in Twickenham and now regularly attracts close to 50 players over its two weekly sessions on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

An additional venue in Chiswick opened earlier this year on Monday evenings which has been equally popular.

The sessions attract a broad spectrum of players including many women who have never played before; women who used to play but dropped out of the sport and parents of youth footballers keen to better understand the game their children play.

"After years of cheerleading from the sidelines, it's great to finally make it on to the pitch with a bunch of like-minded mums who want to have fun, stay active and show their daughters that they can play too," explains Laura, Twickenham Swans FC player.

Due to the popularity of the existing sessions, the ambition for Swans Football is to continue to expand to neighbouring areas in 2025 starting with the new Richmond, Barnes, Chiswick venue opening in January with further venues set to open in Spring 25.

All new players are entitled to a free try-out session.
