Richmond borough is set to get more trees for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee this month, as the Mayor hosts a special event and the Council confirms that every ward of the borough will get a tree by the end of the planting season.

Mayor of Richmond Cllr Geoff Action will be planting an English Oak tree at Moormead Recreation Ground on the 11 March, 2022, at 11am - the 70th day of the year that Queen Elizabeth II marks 70 years on the throne.

Members of the public are invited to come along to the event which will see the fifteenth Platinum Jubilee tree in the borough planted, forming part of the UK-wide Queen's Green Canopy (QGC) - a network of trees marking the monarch's long reign.

In addition, every ward in Richmond borough is set to get a Jubilee tree by the end of the current tree planting season, the Council said in a news release yesterday.

So far only Kew, St Margaret's and Twickenham have Jubilee trees: these are the 12 Broadleaf trees at Marble Hill Park, a Cherry Tree at Royal Variety's Brinsworth House and a tree at Kew Gardens.

The current tree planting season runs from October 2021 to March 2022 but Jubilee trees can also be planted from October 2022 to the end of the year, according to the Queen's Green Canopy website.

Speaking about the tree-planting event this month, Cllr Acton said: "2022 is a significant milestone marking Her Majesty's 70 years on the throne.

"The Green Canopy is a wonderful initiative from The Queen which will leave a lasting beneficial impact for future generations to enjoy.

"We will be marking the Jubilee throughout the year with a number of events and initiatives including the Green Canopy and Platinum Jubilee Street Parties.

"Please join me at Moormead Recreation Ground on 11 March for this special tree planting ceremony. I look forward to seeing you there."
