The Twickenham MP has tabled a Commons motion calling on the London mayor to delay the extension of the ULEZ zone to cover all of the borough.

Munira Wilson is also calling for a doubling of the money available in the scrappage scheme to allow people to change from older vehicles to less polluting alternatives.

The Richmond borough has the highest level of car ownership per household in the capital with the result drivers in the area are most likely to be hit by the daily charge of £12.50 from August.

The Lib-Dems on Richmond Borough Council say they support expanding the ULEZ zone out to the M25, but they are arguing against the way it is being done.

The MP said: "I agree, as do most Londoners, that we must clean up our polluted air - but the way ULEZ plans are being rushed through during a cost-of-living crisis is reckless.

"The Lib-Dems are calling for a properly funded scrappage scheme and a longer lead time to help people prepare."

The MP has submitted an Early Day Motion, which is designed to highlight an issue and, sometimes, will lead to a Commons debate, however that is thought unlikely in this instance.

The EDM also calls for on the Government to contribute cash towards the scrappage scheme, which would be used to support commuters who regularly travel in to the larger ULEZ zone to switch vehicles.

Speaking to the BBC, Ms Wilson said: "The plans are being rushed through without enough thought for how people will cope from a financial or practical perspective.

"This is simply not the right time to add more pressure on people's wallets. It's reckless to do this in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis."
