Twickenham table tennis group proving age is no barrier with two players over 90

A Twickenham community centre is proving that age is no barrier to staying active, with two 94-year-olds still regularly stepping up to the table in one of its most popular groups.
The East Twickenham Neighbourhood Association (ETNA), based on Rosslyn Road, has been serving residents for decades and offers a wide range of activities, from exercise and wellbeing sessions to arts classes, language groups and family activities.
Among its busiest activities is its over-50s table tennis group, which meets twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays.
The group has been running in some form since around 2000 and has grown over the years, with a beginners' session added on Thursdays before the intermediate group takes over.
But two of the group's most notable players are Bernard Harrison and Eric Ruggier, both aged 94 and still playing despite the understandable challenges that can come with age.
Bernard has played table tennis, often known as ping pong, on and off for much of his life.
His years of experience appear to still be paying off too, after he won the national Over-90s championship last year, helped by what organisers describe as a "wicked spinning serve" and sharp tactical play.
Eric also discovered table tennis at a young age, although he came to the sport through unusual circumstances.
Following concerns over a weak heart, he was reportedly advised by a doctor to avoid sports, apart from table tennis.
At the age of 17, Eric won the South African championships in his age category and still brings an attacking style of play, using powerful smashes and short returns to catch opponents out.
ETNA has operated from its current Victorian building at 13 Rosslyn Road since 1985 after local residents campaigned to secure it for community use.
In recent years, the centre expanded further with a new extension including an accessible café, dining area and kitchen space.
Today the centre hosts everything from chess and bridge clubs to advice services and a nursery, but Bernard and Eric continue to demonstrate that staying active does not come with an age limit.
