The Exchange, Twickenham is screening the award winning film about the iconic artist Frida Kahlo, ahead of a major exhibition opening at Tate Britain next month.

On the 20 May viewers are taken into a cinematic immersion into the world's best loved art which sits at the intersection of cinema, visual art, storytelling and community.

Becky Shaw, programme and partnerships manager at the Exchange said: "Seeing cultural cinema up close and personal can really move an audience and change the way they see the world."

The film takes viewers beyond Kahlo's famous self-portraits, exploring the woman behind the artwork through narration, personal insights and close-up visuals of her paintings.

Through a feast of vibrancy on the screen, the film delivers an immersive experience of Kahlo's art, Shaw said, "it's as if you're within the artwork itself.

"Seeing cultural cinema up close and personal can really move an audience and change the way they see the world and experiencing cultural films on the big screen entirely magnifies the experience - it can be quite emotional."

Frida Kahlo is known for her striking bold style and has remained one of the most celebrated female artists in the world.

Born in 1907, Kahlo transformed personal hardship into expressive artwork as she combined her lust for life, men, women and her cultural heritage into her passion.

Screenings like these, make world-class art more accessible to local audiences and remove the physical and financial barriers.

Shaw added that,"Art is not just aesthetic, it is often radical and thought-provoking as artists respond to the world around them at any given time."

There is a strong desire for events like these locally in Twickenham, Shaw explained: "The appetite for these events speaks volumes with regular packed-out showings and returning audiences."

Being able to bring these films to the heart of Twickenham is important and is not defined to one demographic, its appeal transcends from students to the older generations.

Shaw concluded: "We value our role in the community as a vibrant arts hub by encouraging inclusion and diversity as well as increasing footfall to the area, helping to boost local economies."

Exhibition on screen: Frida Kahlo will be shown at the Exchange this Wednesday at 2.30pm and 7pm.

The theatre will also be hosting an encore screening in July to celebrate the anniversary of Kahlo's birthday.
