An 18th century chapel in Twickenham is in need of "urgent" attention, according to a planning application submitted to Richmond Council.
St Mary's University has applied for listed building consent for a range of restoration works at The Chapel in the Wood, after a survey in September 2023 revealed a series of issues.
"At the moment the building fabric is putting the interior at risk and it needs to be urgently fixed in order to preserve the heritage asset," the application explained.
"By enhancing the appearance and longevity of the chapel, this repair work will also contribute to the preservation of the surrounding grade II* listed Strawberry Hill Park and Garden."
The planning application says once the exterior work is complete, the university will then look to restore and enhance the interior of the chapel.
If approved, works will improve cleaning and repairing the stonework, replacing guttering and downpipes, repairing the timber facias, striping the "modern, unbreathable paint" from the brickwork, and making good the façade.
"Our aim for the works proposed in the planning and listed building application is to deal with building issues that have been present at The Chapel in The Woods for many years," the application continued.
"Although the works do propose some modifications to the listed and historic fabric, in all cases, as set out within this report, they are intended to enhance and preserve the heritage asset.
"Ultimately the overall goal of these works is to ensure the chapel is protected and looking its best, so its contribution to the surrounding area and heritage setting can continue for many years to come.
"Something we think you will agree is a significant public benefit."
The Chapel in the Wood was first built in the late 18th century as part of Horace Walpole's "vision for a neo-Gothic estate".
