A planning application to install two digital screens in the centre of Twickenham have been refused.

BT Group submitted plans to have a pair of 75-inch LCD display screens, one on each side, on a new Street Hub unit on 16-18 London Road.

In May and June 2025, Richmond Council approved the upgrade of six existing InLink Units within the borough as part of the company's plan to replace the 'old with new'.

However, BT's proposals to display adverts on a Street Hub 3 unit on 16-18 London Road were rejected because of its "visually intrusive" appearance to the nearby area.

A planning officer in their report said: "The development, by reason of the siting and size of the proposed advertisement, would represent a visually intrusive and prominent form of development, compromising the quality of the public realm and harming the character, appearance, significance and setting of the public realm, nearby buildings of townscape merit and the conservation area in general."

In its plans, BT said the Street Hub 3 was its "next generation Unit" which featured environmental sensors, insight counting and 5G mobile connectivity.

As part of the application BT were also going to remove two kiosks - one opposite the police station and another on Garfield Road.
