Watch: Twickerseal spotted catching a fish near Eel Pie Island

By The Editor 13th Aug 2021

As residents deal with the crushing news about the death of a popular seal named Freddie Mercury, this footage will hopefully put a smile back on people's faces.

There are 900 harbour seals and 3,200 grey seals in the Greater Thames Estuary and increasing numbers of the loveable mammals are being spotted upstream of Putney Bridge.

Freddie, who was put down after suffering serious injuries to its flipper in a dog attack on Sunday, was a harbour seal.

The river in Twickenham is home to an adult grey seal who has been seen many times over the past four years. It has been warmly claimed by locals as one of their own and nicknamed Twickerseal.

Twickerseal was spotted again yesterday (Monday, March 22) in the Thames in front of Eel Pie Island.

Twitter user Captain Quack shared a video of the seal catching a huge fish for its lunch. You can watch it at the top of this story.
