Lizzie does it again! – Second medal for Richmond Canoe Club star at World Championships

By Rory Poulter 23rd Sep 2021

Lizzie Broughton, from Richmond Canoe Club, today claimed a second medal at the World Championships in a thrilling finish to the 5,000m event.

The paddler, who trains on the Thames, raced to a bronze at the global event in Denmark after claiming a silver on Saturday in the 1,000m.

The 33-year-old, who has a remarkable haul of medals from global championships, expertly picked her way through the field to chase down the leaders on the last lap of the long circular course.

A final push ahead of the line saw her confirm third spot ahead of Linnea Stensils of Sweden.

The website of British Canoeing celebrated Lizzie's second medal, under the heading: "And she's done it!"

It added: "A brilliant bronze for Lizzie Broughton who timed her race to perfection and finished 0.21 seconds clear of Stensils to take the bronze medal!"

To win two medals at what is the most prestigious event in the sport is a remarkable achievement for Lizzie, who has been a member of Richmond Canoe Club since a youngster and is an inspiration for the many young paddlers at the club.

The kayaker has raced at every distance from 200m upwards for her club. In 2015, she was part of the first ever mixed senior team to win the gruelling 125 mile Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race, smashing the mixed team course record by almost an hour.

She and her paddling partner, Keith Moule, finished the course in 16 hours 40 minutes, which was 55 minutes quicker than the previous mixed course record of 17 hours 35 minutes.

Richmond Canoe Club has a thriving youth section and canoeists of all ages can be seen ploughing up and down the Thames from their base near Richmond Bridge up to Teddington Lock on a daily basis.

Lizzie is a Senior Insight Manager at ukactive, which is a not-for-profit industry association that works with thousands of organisations to help people become more active, and she clearly leads by example.
