Twickenham Olympians miss out on medal

By Guest 13th Aug 2021

Team GB missed out on a medal in the Women's Rugby Sevens competition after being beaten by Fiji in the bronze medal match.

The side lost to France by 19-26 in the semi-finals which took place earlier in the morning.

It was heartbreak once again for Team GB after the men missed out a gold medal earlier in the week.

Twickenham and Richmond were heavily represented within the squad, which includes Celia Quansah together with her partner Meg Jones, Emma Uren and Abi Burton.

After going through their pool with two wins and one loss to New Zealand, Team GB set their sights to improve on the men's performance where they had come fourth.

They then saw off USA in the quarter-final before going down to France in the semis.

Fiji started the better in the bronze medal match with two quick early tries before Jones scored before half-time to make the contest intense.

However, Fiji's Reapi Ulunisau scored a try after half-time to seal the contest for Fiji. Another Jones try closed the gap to nine but it wasn't enough to overpower Fiji.

Jones has managed to get on the scoresheet a few times in the tournament with tries against the Russian Olympic Committee and Kenya in the pool stages.

The Wasps fly-half has made a strong impact within the squad having impressed with performances in the pool and knockout stages.

Although the result was disappointing for both the men's and women's teams, it represents a long journey for both sides.

After having their funding cut last year by the RFU due to Covid, the sides managed to secure National Lottery funding to get to the games.

Both teams gave it there all and now many hope that with better funding, the sides can be once again in the medal hunt in three years time in Paris.
