Richmond Film Society - Screening of 'Green Border' (Poland)
The Exchange, 75 London Road Twickenham TW1 1BE

Tuesday 24 February
In early 2021, Belarusian dictator, Alexander Lukashenko sought to provoke Europe and retaliate for sanctions by luring refugees to the Belarus/Polish border by falsely promising them easy passage into the EU. Ruthlessly turned back by the Polish border guards, the refugees became pawns in a brutal geopolitical and humanitarian crisis and struggled to survive in freezing conditions. Against this backcloth, the lives of Julia, a newly wealthy activist who has given up her comfortable life, Jan, a young border guard, and a Syrian family become intertwined.
Agnieszka Holland's drama about Europe's migrant crisis could hardly be more topical, with the dehumanisation of refugees a key feature in anti-migrant rhetoric. Green Border has the directness and truth of a documentary and the emotional immediacy of a narrative feature. It is a very well crafted film with multiple, inter-related strands, albeit, at times, a tough watch. It went on to garner 30 awards worldwide.

Non-member tickets are £5 (full-time students £3) and can be purchased in advance from The Exchange's Box Office: online at http://exchangetwickenham.co.uk/events, by telephone 020 8240 2399 or in person.
