Reflections on the magnificent deer of the Royal Parks

By Rory Poulter 22nd Mar 2022

These spectacular mirror image pictures have been captured by local photographer and illustrator, Max Ellis.

They shine a light on the magnificent wildlife that exists on our doorstep in the Richmond and Bushy parks.

Max has made capturing images from nature one of his specialities and he spends many hours sitting quietly in the Royal Parks with the resulting pictures sold around the world.

"I love deer, I love their silhouettes that create a magnetic focus in any shot, instantly readable.' he said.

"I love their proud slightly haughty demeanour."

He noticed during the pandemic and lockdown that there was a big increase in the number of puppies and dogs, which has created its own problems.

"This influx of people and dogs has made the wildlife extremely nervous, and these animals are never more twitchy than in the fog.

"They rely on sight and smell to pre-empt danger and as soon as the visibility drops, they are all on high alert."

Max has spent the past 20 years as a professional illustrator and photographer and was the lead photographer for the Glastonbury festival for seven years.

Working closely with his wife, international House Music Diva Katherine Ellis, he has developed brand strategy, international advertising, billboards, record covers, publicity, and video materials.

He has worked with top agencies and publishing houses throughout the world and heading up many internationally famous campaigns.

His clients are as varied as Lloyds Bank, Penguin Books, Beefeater Gin, Sony PlayStation, Camel, Bill Bailey, Paul McKenna, The BBC, The Guardian and The Times.

His website and galleries of his work can be viewed here.
