A 16-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of a teenager at the Craneford Way playing fields in Twickenham.
The killing, which was witnessed by pupils from a local school who were playing rugby, has shocked the community and raised complaints about a lack of police on the streets.
The victim, 18-year-old Hazrat Wali, arrived in the UK as a refugee two years ago and was studying at Richmond College, which is less than 100 yards from the murder scene.
Local schools and the college have put in place support and counselling for children who witnessed the terrible events on Tuesday afternoon.
At the same time, the police have been operating 'reassurance' patrols at Richmond College and in the surrounding streets.
The police announced the arrest of the 16-year-old of murder today and said he is currently being held in a London police station.
In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said: "Police were called at 16:45hrs on Tuesday, 12 October to reports of a stabbing on a playing field in Craneford Way, Twickenham.
"Officers attended along with London Ambulance Service and found an 18-year-old man with stab injuries.
"He was taken to hospital, but was pronounced dead at 17:45hrs. He has since been named as Hazrat Wali, from Notting Hill.
"His family continue to be supported by specially trained officers."
A post-mortem examination has been scheduled to take place at Kingston Mortuary on Friday, 15 October.
It has been reported that some people captured the stabbing attack on camera and have posted the footage on social media. The police have asked anyone involved not to do so, in order to prevent further distress to the victim's family.
Anyone who has information or footage of the incident is asked to call police on 101 or tweet @MetCC quoting 5697/12OCT. You can also upload evidence here.
Information can also be provided to Crimestoppers, anonymously, by calling 0800 555 111.
