A road has been closed to all through traffic in Twickenham and police are evacuating residents.

Meadway has been closed for several hours.

A police officer at the scene said: "It is something with the potential to be dangerous, but I can't say any more.

"We have closed the road off as a precaution."

Rob Holmes, also at the scene, said that he called the police while magnet fishing earlier as he pulled up what he believes to have been an explosive device.

He said: "I was magnet fishing and when I pulled it out there was a hand grenade on the end."

He called the police mid afternoon and has not been able to retrieve his bike as the road was immediately cordoned off.

Police are escorting residents out of the area until it is deemed safe.

More details to come as soon as we hear...
