A 16-year-old has been arrested in connection with the series of machete gang attacks on cyclists in and around Richmond Park.

The teen was taken in last Friday on suspicion of robbery, attempted robbery, possession of an offensive weapon and allowing to be carried in a stolen vehicle.

The teen has subsequently been charged as part of a separate investigation, but is still under suspicion of the offences relating to the Richmond Park attacks.

Masked thugs riding mopeds have launched a series of violent attacks on cyclists in recent weeks, designed to steal expensive racing bicycles.

Their targets included professional cyclist, Alexandar Richardson, who was threatened with a machete and suffered some injuries as he tried to fight them off

The attacks have led many scared cyclists to stay away from the Park and the surrounding area, while the local MP, Sarah Olney, has called for an increase in police numbers to keep visitors and cyclists safe.

A police report released alongside news of the arrest said: "At 16:01hrs on Thursday, 7 October, police were called to reports of a robbery near to the Roehampton Gate entrance.

"A man in his 30s was approached by four males travelling on two mopeds who pushed him from his bike, causing minor injuries. They threatened him with a machete before taking the bike and riding away from the area.

"At around 17:00hrs on Monday, 11 October, a man in his 30s was knocked from his bike by two males travelling on a moped who then stole his bike in Danebury Avenue, SW15. He was also threatened with a machete. He suffered minor injuries as a result of the fall from his bike.

"At around the same time a man in his 50s was pushed from his bike in Roehampton Lane. He was approached by two males on a moped. No injuries were reported.

"Enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing and anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to call 101 or tweet @MetCC quoting CAD 5103/07OCT.
