Santa, a star of Strictly, children's choirs, musicians, performers and Peter Rabbit are gathering at a new venue for a bigger than ever Richmond Christmas lights switch on.

The event takes place tomorrow – Thursday - afternoon in the natural amphitheatre that is the Richmond Riverside terraces near the bridge.

And, should there be any trouble, there will also be some festive Stormtroopers who, contrary to Star Wars myth, originated in Twickenham rather than a galaxy far far away.

Anton Du Beke, the Strictly judge and dancer, who is appearing as Buttons in the much anticipated production of Cinderella at Richmond Theatre, will be beaming in a video message shortly before the switch-on at 6.15pm.

The event, which takes place alongside Tapas Brindisa from 5pm, will feature a big screen and stage at the centre of the festivities.

It will be preceded by a procession along the towpath led by Santa, his elves and children from St Richards Primary School and Falcons Prep Richmond who will be singing seasonal songs along the way!

Children's favourite, Peter Rabbit, will be appearing for selfies at Whittaker Avenue at 4pm and near the Riverside main stage at intervals from 5pm.

The main stage will be a hive of festive activity and family fun, with contributions from Harlequins and the Skylarks charity, which is in the midst of a fundraising driver.

There will be music from Radio Jackie, elves, a juggler, Christmas choirs and musical performances, including the Richmond Music Trust, and even the Star Wars Stormtroopers.

To mark the occasion, the bells at St Mary Magdalene Church will be rung in celebration, which will be attended by the Mayor, Cllr Geoff Acton.

The Christmas lights event is financed and organised Be Richmond, which is an alliance of some 300 local businesses, who also provide and pay for the town centre lights and decorations.
