The Met Office has issued a Code 3 cold weather alert in anticipation of freezing temperatures and icy conditions.

It runs from 6pm this evening – Wednesday - through to 9am on Monday morning.

The Council warned: "There is a 90% probability of severe cold and icy conditions in parts of England, including in Richmond upon Thames.

"Conditions are expected to turn colder on Wednesday evening as Arctic air spreads south.

"Very cold nights are expected, with potentially severe widespread frosts. Daytime temperatures expected to sit near to or just above freezing."

The Council said cold weather can have a serious impact on health, and it is therefore important to try and heat the rooms you use to at least 18°C if you can, particularly if you have reduced mobility, are 65 and over, or have a health condition such as heart or lung disease.

Overnight, people who are 65 and over or who have pre-existing health conditions may find bedroom temperatures of at least 18°C are good for their health; this may be less important if you are a healthy adult under 65 and have appropriate clothing and bedding.

The Council advised that if residents can't heat all the rooms you use, they should heat the living room during the day and the bedroom just before going to sleep.

The Council, community groups and churches have set up 28 'Warm Spaces' across the borough. These provide safe places to stay warm for those worried about sky high energy bills. Location details can be found here - https://www.richmond.gov.uk/services/cost_of_living_hub/warm_spaces

The Council is offering support to those struggling with their bills, including available grants to help with heating costs and free local advice and support lines, on the Cost of Living Hub. Details can be found here - https://www.richmond.gov.uk/services/cost_of_living_hub
