The Right Honourable Sir Vince Cable, described as "distinguished, dedicated, diligent", was awarded Freedom of the Borough of Richmond upon Thames last night (Tuesday, 11 November).

In a motion moved by the Leader of the Council, Councillor Gareth Roberts, members commended Sir Vince's achievements as "an exemplary public servant and politician, patron and ambassador for local charities, and dedicated resident of the borough."

The civic honour, the highest a Council can bestow, recognises his outstanding public service and contribution to local life.

Sir Vince served as Member of Parliament for Twickenham over three decades from 1997 to 2015 and from 2017 to 2019, with his later term seeing him become Leader of the Liberal Democrats.

He was also Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills.

Alongside his national roles, he has been a long-standing supporter of local charities, community organisations, and cultural life across Richmond borough.

Cllr Roberts said: "Sir Vince has been a tireless advocate for our borough – representing Twickenham on the national stage with distinction and dedication. This honour reflects his decades of service to our community and his continued commitment to public life.

"Throughout his career, Sir Vince has embodied the values that make Richmond such a special place – fairness, curiosity and a genuine care for people.

"His work has left a lasting legacy both locally and nationally, and it is only fitting that we mark that with the Borough's highest civic honour."

Sir Vince's contributions extend beyond politics. He is known for his expertise in economic and business affairs, his advocacy for social justice, and his support for education and the arts.

He is also a dedicated supporter of local charities, including those working on homelessness, mental health, carers, and cancer support.

Previous recipients of the Freedom of the Borough include the late accessibility activist Alan Benson MBE, renowned theatre director Sam Walters MBE, and broadcaster, biologist, and natural historian Sir David Attenborough.
