Richmond Council has confirmed that a fallen tree blocking a Twickenham footpath has now been removed.

A tree fell on the towpath between Cambridge Park and Denton Road on Monday, 2 February, prompting the path to be closed to the public by arborists attending the incident.

However, today (Wednesday, 4 February), the Council confirmed that the tree has been removed and that the footpath will reopen this afternoon.

A spokesperson from Richmond Council said: "The Council was made aware of the incident on Monday (2 February) evening.

"We mobilised our specialist Arborist contractor who attended the site at first light yesterday (Tuesday, 3 February) to clear sections of the tree from the riverside area.

"The size and position of the fallen tree make the clear-up complex and whilst we hoped to open the path today this was not possible without unacceptable risk of the tree being swept into the Thames."

"A diversion has been put in place for those using the tow path and our contractor will return today (Wednesday, 4 Feb) to continue working towards safely opening the path."

"An Arboricultural Officer has been on site to make observations, which will be used to help us to understand the cause of failure."
