The Molesey Boat Club on the banks of the River Thames was the location for the filming of a new movie this week, directed by Hollywood superstar George Clooney.
The heartthrob actor himself was the star attraction for those were on the water at the time and those passers-by who did a double take when they caught sight of Clooney, who is also co-producer.
The movie, The Boys in the Boat is the true story of the University of Washington's 1936 eight-oar crew and their quest for a Gold medal at the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936.
The Boat Club on Barge Walk, East Molesey, had a makeover with a German Nazi swastika flag flying alongside the US Stars and Stripes at the front of the Boat House and the Molesey signage temporarily removed.
Bearded Clooney, wearing a padded jacket, faded blue jeans and Nike trainers looked relaxed and could be seen laughing heartily alongside the camera operator as the rowers prepared to enter the water.
The crew was made up of the sons of loggers, shipyard workers and farmers and defeated their much-fancied rivals from eastern and British universities, and finally the German crew rowing for Adolf Hitler's Germany, which could only manage bronze.
The movie is based on the book of the same name by Daniel James Brown and has been filmed at Winnersh Film Studios in Berkshire, Los Angeles, Berlin, and Cleveland Lakes near South Cerney in the Cotswolds. It is expected to be released next year.
The cast includes British actors Callum Turner, who appeared in the BBC series The Capture and plays the main character Joe Rantz and Sam Strike, who played Johnny Carter in EastEnders.
