'Incongruous' shop sign refused at Hanworth Aldi
By Cesar Medina 20th Oct 2026
A tools and materials chain has had its Hanworth application partly approved after one of its proposals was rejected.
B&Q, the UK's largest home improvement retailer, submitted plans to install signs for a new branch at the same site as Aldi on Twickenham Road.
B&Q intends to open a TradePoint site within the planned Aldi store. TradePoint is the company's trade arm, catering to trade professionals.
Richmond Council planning officers approved all but the main shopfront sign, citing its "incongruous" appearance.

The decision notice stated: "The proposed fascia signage as shown as Sign 01 [in the planning documents] by reason of its siting, appearance, and illumination would appear visually intrusive and incongruous within the street scene harming visual amenity, including the character and appearance of the host property."
The former Homebase store on Twickenham Road was confirmed to house Aldi after plans were approved in December 2025.
Homebase shut its door in March 2025 after the company went into in administration in November 2024.
