Local leaders and activists are organising a gathering to oppose planned ticket office closures and reductions in staffing hours at Mortlake station on Monday 21 of August.

The event will take place from 4:30pm to 6pm outside Mortlake Station and will be supported by leading local charity for disabled rights, RUILS.

Campaigners say the station will be savaged by the plans which will see the closing of its popular ticket office and no staffing after 10am on reduced days.

Ticket stations in Richmond and Twickenham, as well as many other stations in the borough, will also be affected by the planned closures.

As previously reported, the closures would see ticket offices placed into one of four categories.

Whilst it is proposed that Richmond Station will be placed in category one, meaning that a member of staff will be on hand to help travellers select and buy the best value tickets, Twickenham will be placed into category two.

This would mean that in theory there will be a number of staff to support travellers – although they may not have ticketing expertise.

Other stations in the borough, including Mortlake, Teddington and Whitton will be placed into category three, meaning that these stations will have just one person manning the building for a few hours, and even this cover will be removed on some days

Cllr Julia Cambridge for East Sheen said: "The community is collectively appalled by this further threat to our train services.

"We've seen less trains, overcrowding and price increases. Now they want to do away with vital help at the station. Monday will be a chance for us to show unity and say 'no' to ticket office closures."

Details of the proposal can be found here.
