Locals outraged at Tesco planning application in Twickenham

Twickenham residents have expressed their objections to a planning application for a new Tesco supermarket on the high street.

The application would see a new Tesco built at 26 - 30 King Street, in the empty lot that used to be Halfords and then Cycle Republic.

This would make it an eight-minute walk from two other Tesco stores.

Several residents feel that it would detract from independent local businesses.

Local resident Sam Platten said in a comment on the application that adding another Tesco to the area would be absurd.

He said: "There are so many independent stores in Twickenham which I once thought the Borough liked to pride itself on, but now it's just a case of filling empty stores as quick as possible with the highest bidder.

"I think the Richmond Planning Team seriously needs to consider if this is what is needed and have a good reason in which I believe there be little if any as to why Twickenham needs this store."

A Tesco spokesperson said: "We're always looking at the best opportunities to serve customers and hope to open a new Express store on King Street, Twickenham later this year."

For full details on the application see planning application number: 21/1172/FUL on the Richmond Council website.
